1st Annual Mother's Day Kinsmen Breakfast May 8th 2005
The Kinsmen Club of High River 1st Mother's Day breakfast was quite a success and it raised about $1200 to support doctor Karen Bailey's efforts to get new equipment specialized for women's health at the hospital.
Area residents will get a chance to treat mom to breakfast and help support women's health care at the High River Hospital this Mother's day.
Local Kinsmen will be hosting a Mother's Day Pancake Breakfast at South Fork Restaurant in support of High River doctor Karen Bailey's efforts to get new equipment specialized for women's health at the hospital. Breakfast organizer said Dr. Bailey's work is a fitting cause to support through the breakfast.
"We chose something to support the women in the community and that seemed like a worthwhile charity," he said.
Dr. Bailey said fund-raising events such as the Mother's Day breakfast help bring necessary equipment to improve women's health care at the hospital. "Even $500 can buy us a piece of equipment. It's really helpful' she said.
Her wish list includes new ablation equipment, a colpotomizer (used to assist a laparoscopic vaginal hysterectomy) and a bladder scanner that she said will benefit the whole hospital. Her ultimate goal is to get a mammogram machine for the hospital.
Bailey said it should be possible for the hospital to be able to obtain one. She pointed out that the hospital's new CT scanner cost in the millions of dollars range, while a mammography machine costs just over $100,000.
"That's a basic piece of equipment. And, its not an expensive piece of equipment in comparison to other equipment we have" she said. "Mammography is such a vital part of basic diagnostic imaging for woman's health."
At present, she said women in High River and area have to either wait for a mobile unit to come to town or have to travel somewhere the equipment is available.
She has already been able to obtain equipment to perform tension-free vaginal tape procedures The first procedure of this kind to be performed at the hospital will take place in mid-May.
"That's exciting because we're already seeing the benefits of the fund-raising where we are actually starting to get some of the stuff here," she added.
The Kinsmen breakfast supporting her activities will run from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Mother's Day and will cost $5 per person.

4th Annual Dinner & Dance April 2nd 2005
The Kinsmen 4th Dinner & Dance for Cystic Fibrosis at the Memorial Centre was a huge success, we were able to raise close to $20,000 for CF and the HRFD.
A 23-year-old man with cystic fibrosis will be think-ing of the High River Kinsmen Club and the generosity of the Foothills conimunity when he runs Heartbreak Hill at the Boston Marathon on April 18.
Marten Devlieger, who has had cystic fibrosis since birth, was the guest speaker at the High River Kinmsen Club's fourth annual dinner and dance on April 2 at the Highwood Memorial Centre.
Proceeds from the dance, which raised a record $19,000, will go towards cystic fibrosis research and a thermal imaging camera for the High River fire department.
"This is amazing," De-vlieger said. "I have never done anything like this before - it's great to see people come and help raise money for CF."
Devlieger received a standing ovation as he told the more than 300 people in attendance of running marathons and becoming a helicopter pilot - sometimes flying into smoky forest fires - despite having CF, a disease that attacks the lungs and respiratory sys- tem.
"I started running when I was little to clear my lungs," Devlieger said. "The more cardio they do, the stronger your heart and lungs are - it helps keep the mucous out of my lungs!"
Devlieger ran the Woody's Marathon in Red Deer three years ago in a time of three hours and 56 minutes. He hopes to crack four hours in Boston.
Mike Nychyk, High River Kinsmen dance chairman, said the record amount raised was thanks to the generosity of the community.
"We had great attendance and the community support from business was incredible (in buying tickets and items for the silent auctions)," Nychyk said.
He said the evening is getting a reputation for not only helping worthwhile causes but also for a great night of dancing and entertainment thanks to the full-tilt boogie band Still Crazy.
The evening was attended by Kinsmen from Calgary, Taber, Edmonton and other parts of Alberta.
